Week 4 (Feb 2-8) ~ Assign 1: Your Philosophy

Using your readings and experiences as an online student, provide an outline of your philosophy for online teaching and learning. Identify the theoretical underpinnings of your philosophy, how this has changed during your experiences as an online learner or teacher, and how you will use this to shape your online teaching strategies.

Your outline should reflect your thoughts about the importance and value of learning in an online environment. Your philosophy should focus not on teaching methods, but rather on values and goals. The following are some questions you can ask yourself in order to help you shape your philosophy:

  • You probably have some favourite teaching methods and practices. Why are these methods successful and can these be applied to online learning?
  • What are the characteristics of a successful learning experience?
  • How do you make decisions about your teaching practices and why you use particular practices?
  • From your experience as a teacher, what do you find rewarding and why?
  • Are there things you need to change in your teaching practice in a move to an online environment, and how might your values be impacted by such a change?
  • What are your goals for your students?
  • What are your plans for further development as an online teacher?

Although it is not specific to online teaching and learning, the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Minnesota has a tutorial that outlines a step-by-step process for writing your teaching philosophy that you might find useful in completing this assignment.

    Hi Michelle,
I am not sure whether I post my assignment on my blog with EDDL 5141 and philosophy as tags or e-mail it to you. Would you like a cover page for it? It is about 4 pages long. Is that about what you expected?
